I am sure this will be a topic on the radio this week. One of the most bizarre aspects I find in the current government shutdown is that it seems the White House is taking steps to keep everything open, except the pay window for employees.
Simply reclassifying employees as crucial or a function as national security is not really a fix to the problem. Yes it keeps the public at large less concerned, but you have lots of federal employees working, or not working, and not receiving their paychecks.
One thing I think this does which is bad, is gives the impression that we can get by with smaller government. I think we can, but the way this is being done is disingenuous. You are making people work for no pay. It is way easier to make things run smoothly when that is an option you give yourself.
