For the Sports Business Analytics class we are doing a little cluster analysis (okay a lot)on NHL hockey team salaries and points.
Sports unions are a bit of a quandary. In part I think it has to do with the widespread differences in talent and therefore earnings potential within the union membership.
The news of arrests and the booming scandal in world soccer was not a surprise today. FIFA is not an organization known for transparency and good governance. This led me to consider the situation in other sporting leagues, and I think they are all prone to scandal. I am not talking about the silliness related to Tom Brady and football security, I mean real scandals. Domestic abuse in the NFL. Concussions in the NFL. Steroid use in baseball. There is probably something in hockey but most people are not watching and do not care.
The discussion surrounding the NBA and the actions taken against the Clippers owner is extensive. Here is the issue that a brilliant woman raised to me and I think it is spot on. While we call these individuals “NBA owners” we are leaving out a key word, franchise. They are NBA franchise owners.
